Nearly 2 million patent applications filed at five largest IP offices in 2012

2013/5/22

Some 1.98 million patent applications were filed at the world's five largest patent offices last year, according to preliminary
data just released by the European Patent Office (EPO), the Japan Patent Office (JPO), the Korean Intellectual Property Office
(KIPO), the State Intellectual Property Office of the People's Republic of China (SIPO), and the United States Patent and Trademark
Office (USPTO), collectively known as the Five IP offices or IP5. This is an increase of 10.5% compared to 2011.

The 2012 preliminary key statistics, published jointly by the five offices today, also shows that together the IP5 offices granted nearly 924 000
patents for inventions last year, an increase of 16.7% compared to 2011.

The full IP5 Statistics Report for 2012 will be available later this year.
The IP5 offices have worked closely together since 2007 to improve efficiency and address the growing backlogs in patent applications worldwide.
The five offices estimate that every year some 250 000 patent applications are filed in parallel with two or more of their offices.
